Broken Down on a Guam Road: The First Ten Minutes

What you do in the first ten minutes of a breakdown matters more for your safety than anything the tow truck does later. This is the sequence.

On a highway (Marine Corps Drive, Route 1, Route 16)

Get the vehicle as far off the travel lane as it will go - shoulder, turn lane, parking lot entrance, anywhere out of traffic. Hazards on immediately. If you are stuck in a live lane, stay belted in the vehicle and call for help; standing next to a stalled car in Guam traffic is more dangerous than sitting in it. If you can exit safely, exit away from traffic and stand well clear of the vehicle - behind a barrier if one exists, never between your car and oncoming traffic.

On village roads

Lower speeds, but narrow shoulders and bad sightlines around curves. Push the vehicle fully off the roadway if it rolls and you have help. At night, keep the hazards running and turn on the interior light so you are visible.

Heat is the second emergency

A midday breakdown on Guam means sun and heat while you wait. Keep water in the vehicle year-round. If you have shade nearby and can reach it safely, use it. Tell dispatch if you have kids, elderly passengers, or pets in the car - that moves you up the queue.

Make the call count

Location first - road name, direction of travel, nearest landmark or business. Then vehicle and symptom. Then stay reachable; a dispatcher who cannot call you back cannot find you. If the engine overheated, do not open the radiator cap. If you smell fuel, get everyone away from the vehicle and say so on the call.
