Parking Lot Scrapes and New Drivers

Somebody in your family clipped a pole at the mall. Or backed into a bollard at the store. Or found a concrete curb that wasn't there ten seconds earlier.

If it was a new driver, the second thing that happens — after the noise — is usually worse than the first. Here's how to keep the whole thing proportionate.

It happens to nearly everyone

Low-speed parking lot contact is one of the most common forms of vehicle damage there is. Tight lots, blind corners, painted bollards that vanish in a mirror. This isn't a character assessment. It's geometry.

Treating it as a catastrophe teaches a new driver to hide the next one. That's the outcome you actually want to avoid — a driver who doesn't tell you about damage is a driver who doesn't tell you about a warning light either.

What to do at the scene

If another vehicle or property was involved, the same Guam rules apply as any other accident. Stop and identify yourself. If damage exceeds $100 or anyone is hurt, contact the police within 24 hours. If damage exceeds $250 or there's an injury, report to Revenue & Taxation within 10 working days of the police report being completed.

If it was only a pole or a curb on your own vehicle, there's no reporting obligation — but there's still an inspection question.

Either way: photograph it. Wide, then close, then video. Damage looks different once it's been washed.

Why "it's just cosmetic" needs checking

Bumper covers hide the structure behind them. A scrape that looks like paint damage can come with a cracked absorber, a bent bracket, or a parking sensor that's been nudged out of aim.

If the vehicle has parking sensors or a backup camera — and most vehicles a new driver is in do — those systems only help if they're accurate. A sensor that's slightly off doesn't warn you it's slightly off.

Get it looked at. If it genuinely is cosmetic, you'll be told that in ten minutes and you'll stop wondering.

Use it as the lesson it is

New drivers who have a minor incident, handle it properly, and see the repair process end to end generally become more careful drivers, not less. The incident isn't the problem. Hiding it is.

Walk them through it: photos, the phone call, the estimate, the repair. It's a good hour of education for the price of a bumper.
