Flatbed vs Wheel-Lift: Which Tow Your Vehicle Actually Needs
Not every tow truck is right for every vehicle, and the wrong choice can turn a $100 problem into a $2,000 one. Here is the difference, from people who repair the damage when it is done wrong.
Wheel-lift: fast and fine for most
A wheel-lift truck cradles two wheels and tows with the other two rolling on the road. For a standard front-wheel-drive car towed with the front wheels up, this is quick, safe, and cheaper. The drive wheels are off the ground, nothing in the drivetrain spins, no harm done.
Flatbed: mandatory for some vehicles
All four wheels ride on the deck. This is the only correct method for: all-wheel-drive and 4WD vehicles (towing an AWD with two wheels rolling forces the drivetrain to spin dry and can destroy the transfer case or transmission), lowered vehicles and anything with minimal ground clearance, collision-damaged vehicles with broken suspension or wheels, and most EVs and hybrids, where a spinning axle can generate current the vehicle is not prepared to handle. If your vehicle is on that list, say so when you call - it is the difference between the right truck and a second tow bill.
