When the Owner Has Passed: Handling an Inherited Vehicle on Guam
Among everything a family handles after a death, the car in the driveway is rarely the priority - which is how it ends up sitting for a year, unregistered, uninsured, and slowly becoming a problem nobody has authority to solve. Handled early, it is a manageable errand. This is general information, not legal advice - estates vary, and some require a lawyer.
Why you cannot just sign for them
A title can only be signed by the owner or someone with legal authority to act for the estate. A grieving spouse or adult child holding the title does not automatically have that authority - it comes through the estate process, which on Guam may mean probate documents, letters of administration, or simplified small-estate procedures depending on the circumstances. Which path applies is a question for DRT and, in many cases, an attorney.
The Practical Sequence
- Find the title and the death certificate - both will be needed.
- Contact DRT Motor Vehicle Division and ask specifically what documentation they require to transfer or dispose of a vehicle for a deceased owner in your situation.
- If there is a loan on the vehicle, contact the lienholder early - the lien survives the owner.
- Once authority is established, disposal itself is the easy part: one pickup, documented transfer, registration closed.
Do not let it sit
An unregistered vehicle deteriorating in a driveway loses value monthly, can draw citations, and gets harder to dispose of as paperwork ages and people move. Six months of 'we will deal with it later' costs more than one afternoon of phone calls now. If the family decision is to keep the vehicle, transfer and register it properly for the same reason.
FAQ
Can Auto Worx pick up the vehicle before the estate paperwork is done?
No - and no legitimate operator should. Ownership authority first, pickup second. We can tell you exactly what to have ready so pickup day is ten minutes.
There are several heirs. Who signs?
Whoever holds legal authority for the estate. If that is unresolved, resolve it first - a disposal operator cannot referee an inheritance.
The vehicle still has a loan. Does the debt disappear?
No. The lien survives. Contact the lienholder - they will explain payoff or surrender options before any transfer can happen.
Call or WhatsApp Auto Worx at (671) 989-2979 with the vehicle details and your title in hand. One call, documented pickup, done.
