The Paperwork to Junk a Car on Guam: A Complete Checklist

The vehicle is the easy part - a truck picks it up and it is gone. The paperwork is what determines whether it is actually gone, or whether it comes back as a ticket, a fee, or a phone call with your name on it a year later. Here is the complete list.

The Checklist

1. The title. The document that proves you can dispose of the vehicle. Lost it? Request a duplicate through DRT Motor Vehicle Division before scheduling anything - this is the step people skip, and it is the step that stops everything.
2. Your ID. Matching the name on the title. If the titled owner is deceased or the vehicle was inherited, expect additional documentation - call DRT before pickup day, not during.
3. License plates. Remove them; the plates are yours to surrender, not the truck driver's souvenir.
4. Signed transfer. Sign the title over at pickup and keep a copy or photo of everything you sign.
5. Registration close-out. Confirm the registration is cancelled so you are no longer the owner of record - this is what ends your liability, and your proof if anything is ever questioned.
6. Insurance. Cancel coverage after the transfer is done, not before the vehicle leaves your property.
   

Special Cases

Lien on the vehicle: it must be released by the lienholder first - no legitimate operator will take a liened vehicle, and you should walk away from any that will. Vehicle in someone else's name: you need their signature or legal authority; 'my cousin left it here' is not a transfer document - see our abandoned vehicle guide for that path. No plates, expired registration for years: usually still workable, but tell the operator up front so the paperwork is ready.

Keep a File

Photo of the title front and back, the signed transfer, the pickup receipt, and the registration close-out. One folder, kept for a few years. Ninety seconds of filing against a problem that is miserable to fix later.

Can I junk a car that is not in my name?

Not without the titled owner's signature or legal authority to act for them. There is no legitimate shortcut around this.

What if the title shows an old lien that was paid off years ago?

Get the lien release from the lienholder before pickup. Paid off and cleared on paper are two different things.

Who removes the vehicle from my registration record?

The close-out runs through DRT. We complete transfer paperwork at pickup; confirming the registration status afterward is your receipt that it is done. Keep it.
