PCSing Off Guam: Ship It, Sell It, or Let It Go
Every rotation season, the same scramble: orders drop, the countdown starts, and the island car that got you to the gate every morning becomes a problem with a deadline. You have three doors, and the right one depends on the car and the calendar.
Door One: Ship It
If the vehicle is worth real money and you are entitled to a POV shipment, shipping can make sense - but the vehicle has to pass inspection clean, and the prep (wash-down, fluid levels, quarter-tank rule, no cracks in glass, working brakes) knocks out more vehicles than people expect. A ten-year-old island car with salt-air corrosion often is not worth the hassle even when the shipment is free.
Door Two: Sell It
The Guam PCS market is real - incoming families need cars, and a running vehicle with cold AC sells. But selling takes weeks you may not have, and the transfer must be completed at DRT with the buyer before you fly. A title signed and handed over at the parking lot is not a transfer; if the buyer never registers it, tickets and problems route to a mailing address you no longer have. Do not leave the island as the owner of record of a vehicle you no longer possess.
Door Three: Documented Disposal
For the car that is not worth shipping and will not sell in time, disposal is the clean exit: one call, we pick it up, title signs over at the curb, and you keep the transfer copy in your PCS binder. If the title is packed in a box already on a boat, request a duplicate at DRT now - that is the step with lead time, and it does not compress.
The Timeline that Works
Sixty days out: decide the door, locate the title. Thirty days out: list it if selling. Fourteen days out: if it has not sold, stop hoping and schedule the disposal pickup. Final week: transfer complete, registration closed, insurance cancelled - in that order.

Can I dispose of my car the same week I fly out?
If the title is in hand, yes - pickup and transfer happen in one visit. Without the title, no, and duplicate titles have lead time. Start early.
Can my spouse or a friend handle the pickup after I leave?
Only with proper authorization to sign for you. Set that up before you fly, not from a layover.
The car is registered to me and a co-owner who already left island. Now what?
Both signatures (or authorization) are typically needed. Call us and DRT before pickup day so the paperwork is ready.
