Every typhoon season leaves a crop of flooded and debris-damaged vehicles across the island. Some of that is unavoidable. A lot of it is parking choice.

Before the storm

Move vehicles away from trees, power lines, and known flood areas - low-lying lots in Tamuning and along drainage paths flood first. Higher ground beats a carport that funnels water. Fuel up before the storm, not after, when stations are down or lined up. Photograph the vehicle beforehand; if damage happens, before-and-after photos are the backbone of an insurance claim.

After: the saltwater verdict

Rain-flooded and saltwater-flooded are different animals. Saltwater intrusion attacks wiring, connectors, and modules, and the corrosion keeps working for months after the vehicle dries out. A vehicle that took saltwater above the floor pan is usually a total loss even if it starts - the failures come later, one module at a time. Do not attempt to start a flooded vehicle at all; water in the cylinders can hydrolock and destroy the engine in one crank. Tow it, assess it, then decide.

Repair it or dispose of it

Freshwater to carpet level with quick drying is often repairable. Saltwater to seat level rarely pencils out.
